🛹 The Brief
Before Perspective Pictures became a full-scale production agency, its founder – Rupert Rixon – embarked on a monumental journey: long-boarding across America from Los Angeles to New York.
The goal? Tell an authentic, gritty story of perseverance, adventure and charity over 3,000 miles on longboards. The project would lay the groundwork for the agency’s creative DNA.
🎬 Pre-Production
With limited budget and resources, the team improvised and adapted.
📋 Secured equipment including GH4 cameras (often mounted on waist harnesses)
🚐 Developed a support system: converted shuttle bus, coordination between UK and US crews
🏁 Mapped a route across deserts, plains and cities, planning minimal crew logistics but maximum adventure
🎯 Set the tone: real footage, raw energy, authentic emotion.
🔥 The Shoot
Over nearly three months, the crews and riders logged daily long-boarding segments (up to ~50 miles/day) while traversing shifting terrain and unpredictable climates.
🎥 Waist-mounted GH4s captured the riders’ POVs as well as go pro’s; handheld and run-and-gun setups captured supporting shots
🌪️ Every environment challenged the crew: deserts, mountain passes, city streets, changing weather and fatigue
🤝 Support crew of three U.S.-based helped with logistics while four Brits rode full-time.
🎞️ The Filmmaking
Post-production was a marathon of its own: hours and hours of footage, deep cuts, story evolutions.
🎬 Years of editing to shape the 52-minute film into a coherent narrative
🎨 Motion graphics used subtly to aid storytelling and brand identity
🎥 The final output aimed for a broadcast-style, yet still authentic and unpolished, feel.
⚡ The Result
A feature-length documentary that told one of the wildest journeys Perspective has ever attempted. A story of friendship, grit and motion – wrapped in a unique brand narrative.Still available to watch on Netflix and Disney + in Europe.
This project became the foundation of what Perspective Pictures would become – agile, adventurous, and built on real stories.
