It takes a village to make a video.
At Perspective Pictures, that village is a London-based video production agency home to producers, art directors, writers, sound mixers, gaffers, and a host of other key people who combine their talents to produce truly engaging and compelling video content.
Whether we are creating lively animations for Adobe or shooting YouTube videos for RedBull, we follow the same core video production process. This keeps our team strong and our process polished, allowing for more consistently impactful video production from start to finish.

PRE-PRODUCTION, PRODUCTION, AND POST-PRODUCTION: THE HOLY TRINITY OF VIDEO
You can break down the video production process into three main parts:
Pre-production, which involves the planning and conceptualisation of a video.
Production, which involves shooting the video footage.
Post-production, which entails editing and distributing the video product.
This trifecta of production allows teams to tackle even the most multifaceted video projects in a more organised and systematic way. So, what does this three-part process of video production workflow look like when broken down?
Let’s explore each one of these core parts:
PRE-PRODUCTION
Pre-production is the conceptualisation and planning phase of making a video. It’s where ideas are formed, roles are assigned, calls are made, and a vision for the video is born.
During pre-production, you’ll find our team going through a myriad of mini-processes, including creative research, storyboarding, video strategy, location scouting, scriptwriting, and casting.
CREATIVE RESEARCH
Kicking off the pre-production process is research—something we do with help of some of the best creative minds in all of London. It’s here that we start pulling out visual references, drafting ideas, and fleshing out a tangible concept for our client’s video.
STORYBOARDING
Once we have a clearer idea of what our video is going to look like and how we are going to manifest it, we move on to the storyboarding process. Storyboarding is a process that entails creating a visual representation of how your video will look, frame by frame, or scene by scene.
This part of the video production process is mostly needed for animations or other motion graphics projects where graphic design elements will be implemented. But storyboarding has major visual and directional value for all sorts of video projects, live action included.
VIDEO STRATEGY
Strategy and structure are necessary for ensuring a smooth, cohesive video production workflow. At this point in the pre-production process, we’ll start outlining some clear goals and create a kind of map for how we are going to bring our video concept to life. Essentially, this strategy is our video production GPS; it tells us how to get where we are going on the best possible route.
Elements like video style, tone, message, colour theme, and perspective need to be predetermined before production commences.
LOCATION SCOUTING
If a video is going to be shot outside a studio, such as at the beach, inside a flat, or against one of London’s iconic backdrops, our team uses this part of the pre-production phase to identify the perfect spot. Location scouting means physically visiting location options and obtaining permission to shoot there if needed.
SCRIPTWRITING
Dialogue on the cards? Scriptwriters have joined the chat. They’ll type out a script that aligns with the client’s brief and expresses its message with clarity and precision, all while sticking to the established time frame and tone of the video concept.
CASTING
Finding the right person (or voice) to bring a character or message to life is crucial to quality video content. Casting agents are tasked with finding suitable actors and assigning them their roles in preparation for the next part of the video production process: the shoot itself.
PRODUCTION
Production is the “lights, camera, action” part of the video production process. The groundwork has been laid, the location is available, the equipment has been organised, and everyone has caffeine coursing through their veins. It’s shoot day!
SHOOTING
Video shoots are an all-hands-on-deck kind of business. This is where all those months of preparation, research, and groundwork finally manifest into hard, tangible footage that will be used as video material for our client.

During a shoot, various producers and art directors set the scene, actors are prepped for their roles, all the lighting and camera equipment is set up, and the footage is recorded. This may take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on the client. Once the shoot is over, it’s a wrap, and the project can enter its final phase of evolution: post-production.
POST-PRODUCTION
Post-production is the process of tweaking and refining the raw video footage into a beautiful, brief-aligned, comprehensive piece of visual content. It includes a lot of editing, music selection, final cuts, and finally, distributing the video to our client.
EDITING
Editing is absolutely crucial for developing a seamless, vibrant, and professional video product. It’s here that we’ll trim the fat off of the raw camera footage we captured on shoot, grade the colours for optimal aesthetic value, and implement a plethora of digital editing techniques to ensure that we create frame-by-frame perfection.
MUSIC SELECTION
Almost every type of video content needs music to come to life—whether it’s an explainer video, a TikTok, or an educational video. The right sound selection and grading make our videos more dimensional and engaging, encouraging future viewers to become fully immersed in your brand’s message.
The type of music used in video content can have a powerful effect on how it is received by audiences, which is why careful music selection is key to the production process.
DISTRIBUTION
The final step in the process of video production is to hand over what we’ve created to our respective client. From that point on, the video is fully developed and ready to be distributed across the internet—or wherever the client has decided to upload their content. Et voila!
WHAT MAKES A GOOD VIDEO PRODUCTION PROCESS?
Evidently, there are a multitude of skills, talents, tools, and techniques needed to make the video production process as smooth, seamless, and successful as possible. It’s an operation that has a lot of different moving parts. Without collaboration, even the highest-budget productions can fall flat.
The ability to collaborate, communicate, and cooperate with people across different departments and phases of the production process is fundamental to its success.
A collaborative team makes video production as a whole more than just work. It’s an ongoing process of resourcefulness and collective growth. Building up a culture of creative collaboration is a big part of what we do at Perspective Pictures, and it is what drives our video production process forward.
LET’S WRAP AND ROLL
As you can see, a video production process encompasses a wide range of planning, conceptualising, shooting, and editing procedures. Even the shortest TikTok videos or Instagram reels need to be approached with the same level of creativity and precision as you’d expect from an explainer video or advertisement.
Our video production process is a formula that helps us develop show-stopping video content for each and every one of our clients, no matter the size or scale.
Behind all these different production processes is a core team of passionate individuals who know what it takes to pull off a stellar video—blood (sometimes!), sweat (plenty), and tears (we’re only human). And we wouldn’t have it any other way!
